HAITI EARTHQUAKE RELIEF
January 2010

On Tuesday, January 12, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake rocked the island country of Haiti, primarily impacting the capital, Port-au-Prince. Offices, houses, hotels, and shops have collapsed. Hospitals are overflowing and the search for survivors is intense. The streets of Haiti are filled with people in shock and searching for loved ones among the rubble.
Your help is needed for emergency relief and long term recovery of the approximately 3 million lives (one-third of Haiti’s population) impacted by this earthquake. Donations may be made to UMCOR, through collections at your United Methodist Church. Every dollar donated to UMCOR goes toward relief efforts.

About UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief) in Haiti-
Is the United Methodist Church in Haiti?
Yes. The United Methodist Church has an ongoing presence in Haiti.
How do I get more information?
The UMCOR website http://new.gbgm-umc.org/umcor/ is posting updates as fast as information can be confirmed.
Are any UMCOR work teams in Haiti?
The United Methodist Committee on Relief had several teams in Haiti during the earthquake. Reports from Haiti indicated that two staff members of the General Board of Global Ministries were found alive after 55 hours in the rubble of the Hotel Montana in Haiti. Clint Rabb, leader of the mission volunteer office, and James Gulley, an UMCOR consultant were among a group of persons found on the evening of January 14. They were in Haiti to extend health ministries when the earthquake occurred on January 12.
Future Volunteers
Future volunteers will be needed in Haiti as well as Sager Brown and the Midwest Distribution Center. Lorna Jost, North Central Jurisdiction UMVIM Coordinator, umvim-ncj@brookings.net and your conference will be working together to organize work teams as conditions become
safe. Please remember that this will require years of recovery, prayer and service.
